Its said 3,000 residents have registered in the four days since the registration began
Addis Ababa: The Addis Ababa City Housing Development Bureau announced that it has prepared land in five sub-cities for residents who are registering to build houses.
Addis Ababa City Housing Development Administration Alternative Housing Development Director, Paulos Tamrat, told Addis Zemen. The bureau is working on a variety of options to address the city’s housing crisis.
Recently, under the 20/80 and 40/60 programs, 70 percent of residents who are waiting to get a full house and are able to pay for housing have been offered the opportunity to organize and build housing. He said land for the construction has been prepared in Addis Ketema, Nifas Silk Lafto, Akaki Kaliti, Kolfe Keranio and Bole sub-cities.
He said work is underway to organize 100 to 130 associations and benefit 10,000 homeless households. He said more than 3,000 people have registered in the first four days of the registration process. It shows that people have the capacity and desire to build on their own.
The construction is done in two ways: One is up to nine floors and the other is 13 storeys. The construction is expected to be completed in 18 months, he said. He also said that the associations can build with any contractor they want.
He said the bureau is working on various housing development options to meet the demand for housing. He said the union housing option that is currently being implemented will not only enable the able-bodied citizens to protect the government equally but also create more opportunities for those who will be hosted by the government program. He also said that if potential home seekers use their money, resources and time to build, they will be able to become homeowners in a short period of time.
He said the housing problem in the city cannot be solved by the government alone. For the past 17 years, the government alone has monopolized the housing program, leaving everyone in power and powerless. In this way, the problem has not been alleviated and the government’s ability to build is not in line with its needs, he said.
In the last 17 years, the government has been able to build only 400,000 houses, he said. Recognizing that this is not feasible, he said the bureau is working to alleviate the problem of housing supply through public and private partnerships, public-private partnerships and the construction of rental housing.
In 2005 alone, more than 800,000 home seekers were registered; About 200,000 subscribers despair and spend their money, he said there are currently 600,000 homeless people in the area. In addition, according to a recent study conducted by the Ministry of Urban Development and Construction, there are 1.5 million homeless people in the city.
